First recognized as a heritage tree in 1987 by Brian Wenham of the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Winnipeg. A recognized landmark for the Point Douglas area residents, this plains cottonwood may be one of the older trees in the City of Winnipeg. Elly Heber of the Point Douglas Historical Society states in an interview with the Winnipeg Sun (February, 1985), "that the large tree at the end of the street was there over 100 years ago when the parents of one of my present neighbours (Mrs. Lillian Eagleton) built their home."
